Welcome…

Now there’s once again access to a new and improved home page. We hope you’ll enjoy reading the stories about the family – and new stories and pictures are welcome.

The family tree is working again and will be updated continuously. Everybody is encouraged to contribute information. New family members will be added to the family tree as new data becomes available. We would also love to receive pictures for the “portraits” in the family tree.

This site is not Facebook but a bit more stationary, show casing the family tree which tells where we come from and provides a good overview of the family.

The articles on the home page tell stories about how the family has evolved through the generations, and I think these are important for our descendants to know about. This is an opportunity to tell about childhood and upbringing to future generations.

On the home page we follow some families that all originate in Vrensted. We follow them in this country as well as abroad.

Bertel Marinus Pedersen, my mother’s uncle, emigrated to the US with his family. This family, the Pedersens, we are in contact with and we know a lot about their lives after their emigration.

Alfred and Severin Soerensen, also emigrated to the US. The brothers’ lives are documented in letters to the family. The letters (in danish mostly) can be read here on the home page.

My grandfather, Niels Lassen Nielsen, emigrated in 1895 to the Brookings area of South Dakota. Here he lived for 16 years before returning to Vrensted again.

Anders Poul Jensen (Andersen), after spending 1.5 years in the US adopted the last name Filholm (a place between Thise and Vrensted). His two sons, Tscherning and Mads Jorgen Andersen, both emigrated to the US under the name Andersen. Later on both adopted the last name Filholm. A large part of the Filholm families in Denmark and in the US can be traced back to them.

Welcome and thank you so much for any additional information and stories that will help make reading the home page informative as well as exciting. *

Poul Andrew Pedersen…

The Biography
The Necrology

Paul Andrew Pedersen, oldest son of Anna and Bertel Pedersen, was born November 11, 1906 in Vrenstad, Denmark.

Paul Andrew, Maria and Gitte(me)

Eva and Paul Andrew, Minna and Christen (my mother and father)

Ruth Falstad of rural Kathryn, North Dakota, at Britten, South Dakota. The couple started farming in the fall of 1932 in Green township on the east 14 of section 3, known then as the “A. P. Paulson farm.” Two children were born: Dorothy (Mrs. Curtis Torgerson, Clarkfield, Minnesota) and Robert Gerald (rural Valley City).
Synove Farstad (rural Kathryn, North Dakota) at Valley City, North Dakota.
Diane (Mrs. Jack Bjerke of rural Valley City, North Dakota).
During the winters before 1947 when North Dakota State Highway # 1 was completed directly in front of the Pedersen home, the only transportation to town and to school was by horse and sleigh. The family car had to be left one mile from the house where adequate roads were kept open.
The construction of this road made county transportation and mobility convenient and available.
Today*, Paul and Eva (Synove) still live on the farm in Green Township.
*In 1976
___________________________________________________________________

Paul continued farming until retiring in 1975. Paul and Eva moved to the Fireside condominiums in Valley City in 1995.

Axel, Valley City, North Dakota.
His parents , 2 sisters, and 4 brothers preceded him in death.

Rockey Mountains…

Here in the fall of 2005, my son, Tim, is reading English at the University of Eugene, Oregon, USA.

Paul Andrew Pedersen’s descendants. They are spread across several states, and of course I would like to meet them as well.

As a result, I informed Tim that I would come and visit him in Eugene, and I emailed Michelle Halley and Diana Bjerke that I would come for a visit.

Niels Lassen Nielsen lived as a young man (1896 – 1911) in the Volga area of South Dakota. I don’t know much about Niels Lassen’s life there, but he had a saloon. Therefore, I would visit this city and maybe find out more about my grandfather.

Michelle Halley answered back that I would be welcome and then I started planning the trip and booking tickets. The tour started on October 5th and I returned home on November 4th.

Kirsten in Boise, Idaho and Tim in Eugene.

Traveled from Aalborg on 5.10 across Billund and Frankfurt to Denver, Colorado.

In this area we also saw the US airforce academy. But foreigners must not enter here after 11 / 9-2002.

Dan Pedersen, who turned out to be my cousin. I had never heard of Dan, the son of Aksel, a brother of Paul Andrew Pedersen. We agreed to meet in Denver. We met one early morning and I visited them for a few days.

The best part was almost just being with Dan and Marlee, helping to feed, stroking and walking the horses. We enjoyed ourselves and got to know each other pretty well. It was very sad to say goodbye to the two and I hope they will come to Denmark someday.

Eunice, and her husband.

Eunice is an English teacher at the University of Fargo and she proudly showed around the university.

Eva, her daughter Diane, her son Gerald with his wife Beth.

This was the first meeting with the family in North Dakota. Eva recognized me.

Party in Valley City…

We will be followed to the party at one a clock. Here two big cakes were bought for me, where my name says with icing. We have to eat pizza and drink sodas. Diana has provided a guestbook for me, and everyone is encouraged to enter their name and address. We arrange photography in family groups for the sake of clarity, and it takes place under a lot of fun.

In addition to the maze, we get a little train ride in the area overlooking Valley City, the Chienne River and all the bridges.

This is my last night in Valley City, and this is a great ending to a good week. Tomorrow, I travel to Boise, Idaho.

The trip to South Dakota…

12-10-2005. Kl. 815 am, Eva and I drove over to pick up Gerald. We had coffee and donuts for the drive. Gerald had his own large (  Liter) mug of coffee and he was to be a driver. A few years earlier , Gerald had worked as a carpenter in De Smet South Dakota, so he knew the road well.

First we drove along small but long dirt roads to the west. It was because Gerald wanted to show me the village, Kathryn, where the siblings had gone to school and to church.

Then we drove south. Gerald is the one in the family who is most interested in genealogy and it turned out that he had collected some papers and even written something in a notebook. On this stretch we get a good talk about it and I am allowed to look in the papers. Here I find, for the first time, papers that my great-grandfather, Lars Peder Nielsen, got his Dannebrog cross on his 90th day. This I have been looking for a lot at home in Denmark. I find that Gerald and I have many common interests and we get to know each other well on this trip.

Mary Ann Liljegren . I first heard of her two days before I left Denmark. Eva and Gerald have not been in contact with her for the past 10 years. Now they have contacted her for my sake and that we can have a place to stay near Volga.

Before night, we start driving north to North Dakota again. Along the way, Gerald shows us several sights, and he talks about a lot on a slightly alternative route. We visit  a Native American Reserve.

Dorothy and Curtis for the first time. It’s late before we leave Gerald and drive home to Eva. Here we share a beer and talk about our trip. I also have to get ready for a trip tomorrow to the capital Bismarck.

Saturday in Valley City…

Diana picked me up and we were first in her office where I could send mails. Then we were around Valley City and in some stores. We met several of the other family members on the main street. Here began the parade of full music. Most businesses, companies, schools, day care centers and all sports teams had dressed up and decorated vehicles for the parade.

People lined up along the route and the participants threw candy to the children. It is a long parade and much has been done out of the decor.

The parade should give good luck to the local baseball team and advertise the various professions.

Beth and Gerald. We just sit down and have a cup of coffee together before their daughter, Lynn, and I drive to our lunch deal. It is in a small wooden parcel house and is called ” Another time”. Here, Dorothy and Curtis are waiting for us. It is a special place where not 2 plates are alike. Everything is recycled and old, even the napkins. The food is nice and good.

The evening is still young, Eva thinks, and suggests that we all visit Axel and Clara. Kl. is 8pm and we drive over to them and greet son Wayne. He is home to join the party tomorrow.

It was late before Eva and I share our beer and got to bed.

We have a lot to talk about, and we agree to go hiking in the mountains the next day.

The trip through the mountains is very beautiful and we see rivers with large dams.

Back in town again, we visit a great shopping mall, Wall Mart. The evening goes on to talk about the family in Denmark and our lives each.

The trip now goes to Seattle and from Seattle to Eugene, Oregon, where Tim waits.
